Circa 1900 BGI Co. Smooth Face Putter with BGI 120 Shaft Stamp

Here we have a smooth face putter made by BGI Co. around 1900. It measures 32 1/2" to the heel and shows only sparse strikemarks to the head. The shaft is stamped "BGI 120." The Bridgeport Gun Implement Company was one of the first three golf club makers in America starting about 1898 & ending mysteriously in less than 10 years. They were a creative company and made quality golf clubs. BGI was the first company to use a numbering system to identify their different model clubs by adding a number on the shaft of the club. 'BGI Co. Trade Mark' is stamped on the head. Progressive and ahead of their time, their high quality workmanship is prevalent in this club.
