Jack Nicklaus Signed Official Used 1971 PGA Championship Friday Scorecard
Over the years we have handled many exciting items of golf memorabilia, but this lot gives us the opportunity to offer a true artifact of golf history. The first known course used scorecard publicly offered from any of Jack Nicklaus' record setting 18 Major triumphs. It's very existence should thrill serious golf collectors, who understand the tremendous significance of the impassable record of 18 Majors which Jack Nicklaus established as a benchmark for future generations of players to shoot for but sadly fail to eclipse. The 1971 PGA Championship saw the 31 year old Nicklaus lead wire-to-wire as he claimed his 9th Major title, and with this win became the first player in history to complete the modern career Grand Slam for a second time. As Jack continued to establish golf history, it was also a final moment in the sun for an early Titan of the game in the 68 year old Gene Sarazen (PGA champ 1922,23,33). He would be paired with Nicklaus playing his final round in PGA Championship competition that Friday afternoon February 26,1971 at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida. It is in Sarazen's hand, as Nicklaus' playing partner that this scorecard is marked. It records a second straight days score of 69 for Jack, good for a two stroke lead in the Championship after two rounds. Of note is the par 3 16th hole where Sarazen has originally scored a 4 for Nicklaus but has changed the official score to a 3 with his initials G.S. placed on the card to acknowledge the change. This card as issued by the PGA, carried and filled out that day by Sarazen, showing Jack's careful post match hole-by-hole check marks of his acknowledged scores has been duly signed in 10/10 pencil by Scorer Gene Sarazen and Contestant Jack Nicklaus. The official scorecard bears consistent use from traveling 18 holes around the course with Sarazen. This includes some rounding at corners, and a vertical crease on the back nines scoring area. Neither of these would hinder display value of this treasured item. Letter of Provenance from PGA of America Historian comes with this lot. Jack Nicklaus match used memorabilia represents a market on the rise as the Golden Bear marked his 80th birthday earlier this year. This scorecard from his record setting 18 Majors adds an exclamation point to that statement, and is a must have museum quality addition to any collection. A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
