Don Cherry's 1963 US Open Qualifying Round Low Scorer Sterling Medal - Phoenix

Successful amateur and Walker Cup team member Don Cherry qualified for the 1963 US Open by posting the low score for the Pheonix tournament round. The US Open was then played at the historic Brookline Country Club in Massachusetts. The New England weather was windy and chilly leading to the inflated score of 293, nine strokes over par for the best four day aggregate posted by any player at the 1963 United States Open at Brookline Country Club. This hard fought score was attained by Julius Boros, Jacky Cupit and Arnold Palmer. Boros In the 18-hole playoff that followed the next day shot a 70 to earn a companion U.S. Open trophy for the won he had captured in 1952. At 43-years old Boros became the oldest champion in the long history of the event. For his success in the early stages of the US Open Don Cherry received the medal which is offered in this lot. It is engraved on the reverse as follows:

This memento from Cherry's 1963 US Open qualifying round measures 1 3/8" diameter. Sterling and The Robbins Co. hallmarks are found on the reverse.
