Don Cherry's 1954 US Open Sectional Qualifying Round Low Scorer Sterling Medal - Long Island


Successful amateur and Walker Cup team member Don Cherry qualified for the 1954 US Open by posting the low score for the Long Island sectional tournament round. Ed Furgol surprised the field to win his only major title, one stroke ahead of runner-up Gene Littler, at the 1954 US Open at Baltusrol. For his success in the sectional stage of the US Open Don Cherry received the medal which is offered in this lot. It is engraved on the reverse as follows:

This memento from Cherry's 1954 US Open sectional qualifying round measures 1 3/8" diameter. Sterling and The Robbins Co. hallmarks are found on the reverse.
