This club head is the idea of John Daly and the design of Wilson's Bob Mandrella. Over the years Daly had complained that the U.S. Open took his best club, the Driver, out of his hands with a course setup that favored narrow fairways and penal rough. In 1996 as Daly approached the Open at Oakland Hills, he went to Wilson with his challenge to develop the club he needed to hit narrow fairways while retaining most of the distance he achieved with his massive drives. Within two weeks Daly had the club, a 12 degree "Zero Iron" with the thin topline that is a hallmark of the Wilson Staff forged iron. He put it in the bag at the Kemper Open and finished tenth the week preceding the Open. No John did not win the next week at Oakland Hills, but he did have this to say about the zero iron, "I love the zero off the tee" and "I think I've found an iron where I will never have to hit another three wood". Following John's success with the club there was an outcry from the public for the zero club. A limited number were produced with the Wilson rep providing one of the cherished zero iron clubs to Charley Penna. This grip with its black and white half cord design was available in 1999. This club has many holes of playability still in it, or would make a "hang'em up" of great conversation value in your golf room.

This item comes from the Penna Family Collection. This highly successful and respected professional golfing family offers golf mementos from the careers of brothers Toney Penna and Charley Penna, and Tommy Armour whom Toney and Charley worked under for many years as pros at Boca Raton in Florida and various courses in the Chicago area. Toney was a consistent top 20 money winner on the PGA Tour in the 1930's and 40's while his brother Charley competed in 20 U.S. Open and PGA Championships. We have it all from their storied careers in golf both on and off the course, including everything from contestant’s pins, to used sets of clubs, and prototypes for Penna's famous clubs. Toney is an icon when it comes to club making in the 20th Century, first with the MacGregor Golf Company as their chief of design and then later with his own brand of Penna clubs. Many of the designs of club heads used today were first developed by the genius of Toney. We introduce you to this extraordinary collection by offering various lots from the family’s collection in this special offering. This is an opportunity to acquire golf history, possibly for the last time.
