Any quality collection of Golf Memorabilia or Craig Wood collection would benefit from the arrival of this commendably clean and visually attractive 1941 Contestants badge which presents in NR-MT condition. The Hall of Famer, Wood with his 1941 U.S. Open triumph on the heels of his 1941 Masters win became the first player to capture the first two legs of the modern grand slam in the same year (since joined by Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus and Woods). This badge employs the same basic design employed by the U.S.G.A. on each of its yearly Contestants badges in this time frame. The United States governing golf entity would simply change the color scheme of the enamel which encircles the raised U.S.G.A. logo which is boldly centered on the badge. The enamel on this era of Contestants badges is ever condition sensitive, but the black and gold on this 1941 example still shines bright with nary a spec missing from its surface. The reverse displays the stamping of the manufacturer, Robbins Co. of Attleboro, MA. At the 1941 Open, the Penna brothers Charley and Toney added to the families growing golf resume with both brothers competing in the Open held at the Colonial C.C. in Forth Worth, TX. Toney that year would tie for 33rd. This 1 1/8" x 1 1/4" relic of competition at golfs highest level comes directly from the Penna family collection where it has resided for over 70 years.

This item comes from the Penna Family Collection. This highly successful and respected professional golfing family offers golf mementoes from the careers of brothers Toney Penna and Charley Penna, and Tommy Armour whom Toney and Charley worked under for many years as pros at Boca Raton in Florida and various courses in the Chicago area. Toney was a consistent top 20 money winner on the PGA Tour in the 1930's and 40's while his brother Charley competed in 20 U.S. Open and PGA Championships. We have it all from their storied careers in golf both on and off the course, including everything from contestant’s pins, to used sets of clubs, and prototypes for Penna's famous clubs. Toney is an icon when it comes to club making in the 20th Century, first with the MacGregor Golf Company as their chief of design and then later with his own brand of Penna clubs. Many of the designs of club heads used today were first developed by the genius of Toney. We introduce you to this extraordinary collection by offering various lots from the family’s collection in this special offering. This is an opportunity to acquire golf history, possibly for the last time.

In order to bid in extended bidding you must place a bid on the lot before 9pm on auction closing day.
