This club was used by Toney Penna in his later years. He would always experiment with dark mahogany color with white 4 screw insert. The unusual feature is the face was finished. Usually, the face was natural. This is a rare exception.
In this auction we have many pieces of Toney Penna's prized design work which were highly sought after by amateur and professional players alike. Toney refered to many of these clubs as "Reference Clubs". The most perfect rendering of a model, these were used to compare a production club to its ideal. Toney frequently made prototypes, experiments , some were mass produced, some were left on the workbench. Many of his masterpieces were too costly or difficult to make , to be considered for mass production. One example is drivers with intricate face inserts, while beautiful, too many clubs would be rejected because the heads were easily ruined. These clubs are the best of the best, cream of the crop. Toney Penna handcrafted original pieces of art, many ONE of a kind.
