1952 National Celebrities Open - Amateur Champion Sterling Plate
A 72-hole golf tournament in Washington D.C. was held in 1952 in conjunction with the recognition of the top professional and amateur players in the last 50 years of American golf. To determine the top 10 honorees in each level of golf, voting was conducted among the PGA membership and members of the nation's press and radio. The tournament was headlined by the return of retired legend Byron Nelson to play in the pro's division (Ben Hogan had been voted the top pro of the past 50 years). Jimmy Demaret, however would upstage Nelson to claim the pro division title at 282. On the the amateur side Frank Stranahan(who had finished fifth in the amateur voting behind Bobby Jones,Evans, Ouimet, Little) was the champion on the course in the tournament at 293. A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
