1949 Los Angeles Open First Low Amateur Trophy - Riviera C.C.

In 1949, Frank Stranahan was among a field of 126 - 96 pros and 30 amateurs who teed it up for the 72 hole stroke play Los Angeles Open played at "Hogan's Alley" also known as the Riviera Country Club. Playing the first two rounds with the legendary Ben Hogan, Stranahan after firing a 69 in the second round was only nine off the lead of Lloyd Mangrum and a scant stroke behind Hogan. Over the weekend, Stranahan would not make a push for the overall title, but he would finish in his familiar low amateur position. This earned him the 6" in diameter 13" tall golf ball shaped trophy which stands on a 5 3/8 square base. The inscription on the trophy reads:

23rd Annual
Los Angeles Open
Golf Tournament
Riviera Country Club
January 7,8,9,10th
First Low amateur
Frank Stranahan

Back of ball reads:

1 - LAJCC

A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
