Mickey Wright's 1951 USGA Girls Junior Championship Enameled Semi-Finalist Medal
This is the second known Mickey Wright USGA Medal to come to the auction marketplace and we’re honored to have been chosen to offer this museum quality and early Mickey Wight USGA Championship Medal.
Considered by many historians and fellow golfers to be the Greatest Female Golfer of All-Time (GOAT), Mickey was the winner of 13 Major Championships, 69 additional LPGA Tour wins, and considered by Ben Hogan as having the best golf swing he ever saw, man or women! She won four (4) U.S. Women’s Opens and four (4) LPGA Championships in her career. She retired at the age of 34 in 1969 due to her aversion to flying and a foot issue only to stage a comeback in 1973 when she won the Dinah Shore before retiring once and for all.
Mickey Wright was presented this beautiful enameled Medal by the USGA for being a Semi-Finalist in the 1951 U.S. Junior Girls Championship held at the Onwentsia Club at Lake Forest, Illinois. Miss Arlene Brooks, the eventual winner, defeated Mickey Wright 1-up. However, in a three year period of her play in the USGA Junior Girls Championship Mickey placed 2nd in 1950, 3rd/4th in 1951, and became Champion in 1952. What a run young lady! This medal will be accompanied with The Golf Auction Certificate of Authenticity verifying this medal indeed belonged to golf great - Mickey Wright.
Mickey is one of four individuals to be honored with their own exhibition room at the USGA Museum joining Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus. The U.S. Women’s Open medal has recently been renamed in her honor and redesigned with an image of her iconic swing.
