Official Walter Hagen Cup on Wood Plinth - Excellent Condition - 16" Tall

Due to World War II Ryder Cup play was suspended from 1939 until 1945. This didn't stop the United States from picking a team to square off against another first caliber team, consisting of legendary players such as Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen. These "friendly" matches were held with the proceeds benefiting war charities. Five-time consecutive Ryder cup team member Walter Hagen captained the 1939 US team that consisted of Masters winners Sam Snead, Horton Smith, Byron Nelson and Henry Picard among others over the "Gene Sarazen All-Stars." This trophy known as 'The Walter Hagen Cup' is engraved as such on the front side in stylized writing just above the official PGA of America logo. The large trophy is in very good condition and rests on a wooden plinth. Elegant detailing circles both major tiers in the trophy base, and also found on the tips of each handle. This specific trophy was presented to Walter Hagen by the PGA of America to commemorate the challenge matches a few years prior to his passing in 1969. 9 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 16." A letter of authenticity from PGA Historian Emeritus Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
