Old Tom Morris with Championship Belt Type 3 Photo - Arthur Uelyett Photographer - Victor Forbin Collection

Tom Morris, affectionately known as 'Old Tom', was a 19th century pioneer of golf. The British Open winner, club maker, green-keeper, and course designer was perhaps the most influential figure in the history of golf. Allan Robertson taught Tom the golf trade, from making feathery golf balls to clubs. After leaving St. Andrews in 1851 to his new position at Prestwick Golf Club, he eventually returned in 1865. With the new skills learned at Prestwick, Tom went about rejuvenating St Andrews by establishing separate tee boxes on each hole, widening the fairways, enlarging the greens and building two new ones and actively managing the hazards. Tom introduced many of the course design ideas that are the blue print for today's modern designers, creating the 18 hole course (St Andrews had originally 22 holes) and having each nine holes return to the club house.

Old Tom Morris is captured in this photo with his long beard and hat holding a club, with his bright 'Champion Belt' reflecting the sunlight. Back states: Tom Morris Sen. Won Open Championship Belt - 4 times. Born 1821. Arthur Uelyett Photographer stamp. 5 1/2" x 8"

Esteemed French Photo-Journalist Victor Forbin dedicated his life to reporting discoveries made during world travels to absorb as much culture and geography as one could. Born in 1864 in Paris, Forbin rose the ranks professionally at a rapid pace and was soon dubbed "a kind of king in magazinedom." Speaking and writing a number of languages, no journey was off limits, as he felt it was his duty to unveil to the masses his findings. Accompanying each story the accomplished photographer would take a picture, with his insertion into the happenings, these were raw and powerful. His travels brought him to the home of golf, where his routines would bring him to within feet of golf's luminaries Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet battle in major tournaments at venues such as St Andrews and Glen Eagles. Focus however was not only on the male professionals of the golf world, as he found great satisfaction in seeing the sport as a whole, chronicling the journey of a one-armed golfer or amateur lady golfer. Not to mention, the right place at the right time isn't visually explained better than catching the great Babe Ruth swing a golf club prior to his 1922 Spring Training start. The Golf Auction is pleased to have the opportunity to not only view these photos, but to offer them up for auction.
