Payne Stewart's Personal Karsten Ping Anser 2 Gold Plated 1989 $1 Million PGA Tour Winner Putter

By way of Payne Stewart's first major championship the fan-favorite with a sweet swing amassed the once unachievable $1.2 Million in earnings during the 1989 season, more than double his previous year's total of a notch over $500k! It would not only be part of his $11M career purse cuts, but help elevate his status as one of the top players in the continuously growing game. This seven digit number would vault him into rarified air, joining Tom Kite as the only golfers to accomplish the feat in '89. A new concept, it was only one season after the amount was cleared for the first time on tour by Curtis Strange. For reference purposes, in 2018 an astounding 114 golfers eclipsed the one-time far-fetched pinnacle of $1 million in a single season. It took Arnold Palmer nearly 15 years of purse collecting to total that amount in 1968. Payne Stewart enjoyed his most successful PGA Tour season until that point, winning $200k at the PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes just outside of Chicago, Illinois. The then preferred PGA Tour PING putter, an Anser 2, was in his bag during Payne's notable year.

Fellow World Golf Hall of Famer, and PING founder, Karsten Solheim came up with the gold putter program. In search of a way to commemorate every victory and select significant achievements with a PING putter, Solheim started giving out gold-plated putters in the 1970's that were built to the exact specs of the winner's model. One putter is built for the champion while the other is placed inside the PING vault in Phoenix, AZ. While these artifacts occasionally make it to market, never has one with the iconic name of "Payne Stewart" been offered, sourced from his collection. 35"
