Tiger Woods Signed 2000 The Players Championship Used Titleist Driver - Sourced From Newport Sports Museum
Many in the industry are well aware of market trends, with a seismic focal point being the 'Game Used' category and an equally strong golfing sub-category being Tiger Woods. Not often are both represented by the same item, with a piece of short-time use often being that auction lot. THIS DRIVER, SOURCED FROM NEWPORT SPORTS MUSEUM (NSM) IN CALIFORNIA, WAS USED BY TIGER WOODS DURING THE 2000 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP AT TPC SAWGRASS. Red-hot Tiger Woods was less than three months away from capturing the first leg of his 'Tiger Slam' campaign in the US Open, playing the Players Championship at a course that fit his eye in TPC Sawgrass. A younger Tiger Woods won the first of three US Amateur match play tournaments at the course in Orlando, Florida in 1994. The long driver of the ball was known for his extra flare and an aggressive whip of the club head to create maximum head speed in his swing of the 'Big Stick.' That head bared the model 'Titleist Titanium 975D' and was made to the exact specifications of the best golfer in the world, as he expected of his equipment company for each option in the bag. A preference of many long-hitters is less left for their driver, with Tiger Woods playing 7.5 degrees. Woods carried this specific driver in his bag, on one of the grandest stages. The 2000 Players Championship represented one of the most memorable editions of the '5th major,' with Hal Sutton edging out Tiger Woods by the slimmest of margins on that Monday, March 27th. Woods would unsurprisingly win the tournament the following year during his reign of terror. Tiger Woods carefully applied his time-period signature to his driver's face in black sharpie as a stamp of approval. There are signs of wear consistent to that of tournament usage on the sole of the Titleist club, as found when inspection of the accompanying photos is complete. Collectors and investors alike will give great attention to the club in this lot, used by a generational player in Tiger Woods for tournament use. On the grip is a label with the (NSM) Newport Sports Museum (Newport Beach, California) inventory designation, along with the 2000 TPC at Sawgrass information. John W. Hamilton's NSM showcased one of the finest collections of memorabilia across the world of sport, prior to closing their doors in 2014. It measures 43 1/2" from the top of the grip to the bottom of the heel. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
