Clifford Roberts had this to say about the litter project in his book THE STORY OF THE AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB,"When the Masters first began, a pickup crew was equipped with sharp steel-tipped sticks and told to stab and retrieve all pieces of litter immediately after they hit the ground. One of the golf writers cautioned his readers to never to drop paper cups where they stood, as they might get stabbed in the foot. Later we dressed all the clean-up crew in natty uniforms. I do not know if they ever stabbed any feet, but they did acquire a sense of pride in their uniforms and in keeping the course clean."
