Walter Hagen Approaching Trophy Erskine Park Golf Club, South Bend, IN-Plaque with Bronzed Shoes & Ball-Probst Collection

During the Golden Age of Sports in the 1920s, Walter Hagen was to golf what Babe Ruth was to baseball. The first professional golfer to make his living playing the game rather than teaching it, Hagen won eleven major professional tournaments over his long career - two U.S. Opens, four British Opens, and five PGA Championships (including an amazing streak of four consecutive PGA wins). Thus a very appropriate name for this club trophy gifted to the PGA by legendary golf collector Colonel R. Otto Probst who served as secretary-treasurer at Erskine Park Golf Club in the 1930's. In this time period and into the 1940's, Probst was recognized with having the finest golf library in the world. Erskine Park is well known to most Indiana golf fans, including legendary U.C.L.A. basketball coach and Indiana native John Wooden who accomplished the amazing feat of carding both a hole-in-one and a double eagle in the same round at this history filled course. There have only been photos of this award previously known, but now the actual award itself comes to The Golf Auction through the consignment of PGA Reach! 32" x 17" and in fine condition. It displays wear, and one brace on reverse is broken, please see photos. Certificate of Authenticity, as shown with lot, comes to the winning bidder of this offering.
