Willie Dunn Sr. Long-Nosed Play Club - Circa 1865-70

Willie Dunn Sr. was born in Musselburgh in 1821 and along with his twin brother Jamie, played in many challenge matches between 1840-1860. Dunn apprenticed under the Gourlay family, and was keeper of the green at Blackheath until 1864 when he returned to the Thistle Golf Club at Leith Links. Willie worked as a club and ball maker from his house at Primrose Cottage, Lochend, Leith. He remained at Leith Links for ten years before settling at North Berwick. He died at Millhill, Inveresk in 1878. This treasured piece of golf history was once part of a world renowned golf architect's collection. Clubhead is stamped 'W.M. Dunn' and accompanied by a rams horn insert to the edge of the sole, hickory shaft club has a sheepskin grip. The leather face insert was added because of wear. The 77 or 71 stamped on the shaft is a number system from Dunn’s factory. The head measures 5 1/4" in length with a width of 1 7/8". The face measures 1"
