Willie MacFarlane Vintage Signed 3x5 Cut

Willie MacFarlane, like many British golfers of his era, took a position as a club professional in the United States. In 1925 he won the U.S. Open at Worcester Country Club. After tying Bobby Jones over the first 72 holes, the two men played an 18-hole playoff and both of them shot 75. Macfarlane won a second 18-hole playoff by 72 shots to Jones' 73. Of interesting note, Jones was getting set to hit an iron shot in the first round when he felt his club move the ball ever so slightly. With Jones being his only witness, it was up to him to be the judge. Jones said he was certain the ball had moved and therefore penalized himself. The decision may have cost him the title, but it has been a mainstay to Jones's legacy. After the adoration came from fans about his sportsmanship, Jones infamously replied "You might as well praise me for not robbing a bank." Inscription with signature reads 'US Open Champ - 1925', an 8" x 10" black and white reproduced photo of MacFarlane also accompanies this lot. James Spence Authentication (JSA) provides a letter of authenticity with this lot.
