Circa 1848 - Early 1850's Smooth Gutty Percha Golf Ball
Proudly presented here is a choice exemplar of a smooth gutty percha dating back to the timeframe of between 1848 and the early 1850's. These are very difficult to find, especially in this condition. The "guttie" was produced at a time in which there less than 20 golf courses around the world. Scottish divinity student Robert Adam Paterson is credited for the golf ball design after rolling up shavings of the dark rubber-like material to form a golf ball. It would be a significant change to the (expensive) feathery golf ball that was in play prior. Historians of the game understand the importance in the guttie, making it more accessible for the masses. This sphere is in good to very good condition, with a single strike mark visible.
