Over the 1937 and 1938 seasons unless your name was Berg or Page you did not need to show up for the Women's Amateur Golf Championship. These two locked up the event with Page claiming the Championship in 1937 while Patty Berg finished second. These two stalwarts of the ladies game switched positions in 1938 with Berg winning the Am and Page taking home the Runner Up medal. Offered here is the medal Page took home for her second place finish.
The front side of this 1 1/2 inch in diameter cherished award features the raised crest of the U.S.G.A. this is encircled with the block lettering UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION and 1938. Reverse of the medal features foliage of the laurel tree, as woven into wreaths such as those used by the ancient Greeks to crown victors. Stamped into the medal on this side in block letters is the wording "WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP", "RUNNER UP", "WESTMORELAND COUNTRY CLUB", "WILMETTE, ILLINOIS" and "ESTELLE PAGE". The solid silver medal weighs 1.5 oz. and has the stamping of its manufacturer "J.E.O. & CO. and "STERLING" on the side. Medal presents in near mint condition some 73 years after it was crafted. Page would continue to be a factor in Women's golf into the mid-1950's piling up 22 career victories including seven Women's North and South Amateur Championships. Her career achievements were recognized with induction into both the Hall of Fames of New Jersey and North Carolina.
