Bobby 'Robert T Jones, Jr.' Jones Signed 1938 Typed Letter to Augusta National
One page typed letter on American Golf Institute stationery from Bobby Jones in 1938 to his staff member at the Augusta National. Jones' full signature comes in black steel tip fountain pen (grading"10"). The top of the letter (8.5 x 11 inches) shows a rust mark from a paperclip, otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition with standard mailing folds. The letter reads as follows:
"Miss E. W. Taft
Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta, Georgia
Dear Miss Taft:
I enclose draft of letter to go out with the fall dues notices. I wish you would have these written and sent to me for my signature.
Sincerely,
Robert T. Jones, Jr."
Fall dues were important business for the financially thin, at the time, club in the final throngs of the Great Depression. It was hard times on the Augusta National who annually called on 20 members to make up deficits. It was even harder on professional golfers of the late '30's with a record low 42 players being able to accept invitations to compete in the 1938 Augusta National Invitation Tournament (formally to be called the Masters in 1939).
James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed the signature and their auction letter of authenticity will come with this lot.
Please note: This auction will end at 5:00pm EST on Sunday, June 17th, with EXTENDED BIDDING to follow.
