The Spalding Cran Cleek - Pat. Jun 8, 1897 - Spalding Shaft Stamp
Offered here is a vintage Spalding Cran Wood Face Cleek, originally seen in the 19th century. This club has a steel head with a wooden insert and hickory shaft. It features in design, two screws, the heads of which are visible on the back of the blade to hold the wood in place. This club was manufactured in 1897 by A.G. Spalding & Co., and patented in the same year by James Cran. This was the tenth golf club patent granted in the United States. The club has "The Spalding" along with "Cran" and its patent date of June 8 (18)97 on the back. This early Cran iron has a smooth face, though there are some nicks; those made in later years are scored with fine lines. Truly a cornerstone club for any hickory or American patent club collection, this club is expected to attract heavy bidding. This example presents in excellent condition and is sure to shine in any collection. Featuring a 'Spalding' shaft stamp and measuring 39 1/2" from end to heel.
