1877 Medal Presented to the Carnoustie & Taymouth Golf Club by Mr. Robert Steven

We proudly present here an exquisite 1877 Silver Medal presented by Mr. Robert Steven to The Carnoustie and Taymouth Golf Club, now the Carnoustie Golf Club. The Club, formally established in 1842, is one of the 10 oldest golf clubs in existence. Host of many Opens and British Amateurs throughout its rich history, including Young Tom Morris winning the first ever professional tournament held at Carnoustie in 1867. Old Tom Morris’ brother, George Morris, also served a course superintendent for a period of time in its early formative years. Ben Hogan captured the 1953 British Open here in his only attempt as he was able to avoid the Barry Burn on 17 & 18 which has doomed golfers over the years, including Jean van de Velde in dramatic fashion.

This double sided gem features Old English script dated September 1877 on one side and cross clubs and ball on the reverse. Comes complete with spectacular engraving, unique trim patterns and period craftsmanship. The particular occasion of this gift to Carnoustie is unknown but early medals of this quality and age do not present themselves in a public forum very often. Don’t miss this seldom seen opportunity. 2" diameter. Sterling Silver - 31.2 grams in testing with hallmarks most likely covered under the band.
