1899 Copeland Cobalt Blue and Celadon Golfing Theme Sprigged Ware Pitcher
This glazed earthenware pitcher was manufactured by Copeland, formerly Late Spode, in England. It features a bulbous body with a pinched spout and a wide loop handle. The exterior is finished in a high-gloss cobalt blue glaze, while the interior and handle are finished in a contrasting pale grayish-green or celadon-colored glaze. The body is decorated with applied white sprigged relief depicting various golfing scenes with figures in late 19th-century dress, including players in mid-swing, a figure putting, and a caddy carrying a golf bag. A stylized border of tall reeds or grasses encircles the neck, and a geometric lattice-patterned relief border is located just above the foot rim. The underside of the base contains multiple markings. There is a printed circular factory mark in brown depicting a sailing ship with the text COPELAND LATE SPODE in an arc above, and Rd No 150288 and ENGLAND below the ship. Additionally, there is a printed registration mark Rd No 345322. Several impressed marks are present, including ENGLAND, COPELAND, D 99, and 332. The registration number 345322 and the impressed code D 99 identify the year of production as 1899. Size 8" x 6".
