1899 Pewter Three-Handled Brae-Burn Golf Club Trophy

The historic Brae Burn Golf Club in West Newton, Massachusetts was founded in 1897. The club played host to the 1919 US Open and 1928 US Amateur, Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones triumphs respectively.  Donald Ross redesigned the first Brae Burn 18-hole course in 1912 and again in 1928. Just two years after the club was formed, we have a large heavy pewter 3 handled trophy given to the winners of the 1899 Mixed Foursomes Open tournament. This 7 x 5 ½ “ trophy features two crossed clubs and a ball on one side with the other side engraved “ Brae Burn Golf Club, West Newton, Mass., Open Tournament, Mixed Foursomes 18 holes, June 15 , 1899 Best Gross Score, 102. H. C. 4. Net 98., Won by, Mr. R. F. Jones Miss G. B. Hayes The soft shine and deep grey look of pewter was a favorite of golf clubs around the turn of the century because it allowed them to create nice prizes for their tournaments at a cost far less than silver. This example has a glass bottom (at some point in its 127 year existence it has developed a crack but it is out of sight and does not detract from the attractiveness of the trophy). 8" x 7"x 7"
