1913 US Open Drawing by Francis Ouimet’s Brother Raymond J Ouimet
There probably does not exist a more touching and personal tribute to Francis Ouimet’s 1913 US Open victory than this drawing by Francis Ouimet’s brother. The drawing was inspired by a photo that appeared on the cover of the October 9 1913 The Youths Companion (which is included with this lot) but has much additional detail that does not appear in the Youths Companion photo, e.g., clubhouse detail showing people on the balcony.
The complete caption penciled to the bottom of the drawing reads “US Open 1913 The Country Club Brookline Mass Winner Francis D Ouimet”
Note that the printed caption written by Raymond says “Francis D. Ouimet”, which is less common but correctly noting brother Francis’ middle initial “ D” for Desales as a brother properly would.
The drawing is signed in flowing script “ R. J. Ouimet” in the lower right-hand corner.
Raymond James Ouimet was born in Feb. 1897, four years after his Brother Francis Ouimet, and he died in Jan 1966 at the age of 68.
Raymond was also a golfer and per an article in the April 8 1922 American Golfer we know that he was once the city champion of Kansas City and after acting as professional at the Hillcrest Country Club (Kansas City) for two years he had himself reinstated as an amateur.
The drawing itself (13 x 10 “ and framed to 18/1/2 x 14 ½”) depicts the playing of the last hole in the rain of the match at The Country Club in Brookline. Ouimet is at the left. Of the two Englishmen, Vardon is in the center and Ray at the right.
We speculate that this was done by Ray Ouimet in his later life, perhaps for a friend and near the 50th anniversary of the 1913 US Open.
The 1913 USGA Open Championship remains perhaps the most famous and significant in US Open History and immensely popularized golf in the United States. This drawing helps tell the story of that tournament in a unique and meaningful way.
Truly distinctive and original, one of a kind, and museum worthy.
