1921 St. Andrews Championship Handbook Program w/ Open Order of Play Published by John Reid Jr - Excellent Condition - Only Known Example?
Even the most seasoned of golf bibliophiles with a soft spot for the Home of Golf likely have not seen or been offered this publication program produced by St. Andrews in preparation for hosting the 1921 Open Championship. We've never seen it, and its original owner and those since preserved it as it deserved to be - presented in this lot in nothing short of excellent condition..likely the finest of a scant few survivors.
The 1921 edition marked Bobby Jones' Open debut in which the 19-year-old would famously lose his temper and walked off on the 11th hole of the third round after his fourth unsuccessful escape from the hill bunker. This was the begining of his St Andrews (and Open) story that would end with a victory at the 1927 tournament and British Amateur win kicking off his 1930 Grand Slam. Eventually crowning the first US citizen Champion Golfer of the Year (Jock Hutchison), this highly uncommon advertising vehicle from the site of the action features a textured tan paper cover with a printed border and advertising for X.L. Challenger Golf Balls and Spalding's. The publication is identified as being published by John Reid, Junr., Printer, Stationer and Advertising Agent, 33 Market Street, St. Andrews.
The interior contents include a printed Order of Play for the qualifying rounds, listing notable competitors such as Harry Vardon, champion Jock Hutchison, Walter Hagen, and of course Mr. R. T. Jones, Jun. (Bobby Jones). The program features biographical sketches of Leading American Entrants by James Sorley, profiling golfers including Jim Barnes, Chick Evans, and Bobby Jones. Additional text sections provide descriptions of the Old Course by James Sorley, alongside a printed Plan of Golf-Courses map illustrating the layouts of the Old, New, Eden, and Jubilee courses. Period advertisements are found throughout the pages, including promotions for Dunlop Seven golf balls, Tom Morris hand-made clubs, Gleneagles for Golf, and Charles Donaldson's Golf-Wear. Advance your program or golf book collection with likely your one shot at this publication produced for the 1921 Open Championship at St Andrews. .
