1928 Bobby Jones Original Wire Photo with Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, and Johnny Farrell
Five days prior to the 1928 USGA Amateur Championship, Bobby Jones would participate in an exhibition match at The Woodland Country Club, which is less than a mile from Brae Burn Country Club, site of the 1928 US Amateur.
The 36-hole best ball exhibition match was a benefit that raised $10000 for the American Ryder Cup team to send them to Europe. The match ended with the team of Hagen and Sarazen defeating Jones and Farrell one up.
Newspapers report Jones had arrived at Braeburn a week early, familiarizing himself with the approaches to the greens.
If you look closely at the photo you can see Jones already wearing, and pinned to his tie, what looks like his USGA contestant badge with its’ celluloid disc, for the upcoming amateur championship at Brae Burn. . This original 8 ¾ x 7 ¾ “ first generation wire photo appeared in the September 6, 1928 Boston Globe.
The photo is sharp and clear and with the amateur Bobby Jones posing with three major winning professional golfers it is very uncommon and highly collectible
