1929 Miami Open at La Gorce Official Program - Horton Smith Winner
This is a rare and previously unknown program from the early days of the PGA tour, won by the first and third Masters champion Horton Smith. It was one of eight PGA Tour wins he had that year and is most recently played under the name Florida Open. The program is titled Second Annual Miami Beach La Gorce Open Golf Tournament tournament played at the La Gorce golf course in Miami Beach. This tournament was considered a “kickoff” event to the winter PGA tour, attracting many of the top golfers of the time. This 1929 tournament included Johnny Farrell US Open champion, Walter Hagen, British Open Champion and Tommy Armour, former US Open champion, and Gene Sarazen, former US Open and PGA champion. Horton Smith would win this tournament with a score of 289 and the $5000 and gold plate that went with it. Later in 1929 Smith would become a member of the Ryder Cup team and win his only match. Pre-1930 PGA tour programs of regular from the late 1920’s like this one are almost impossible to find and the scarcity of this program makes it worthy of preservation in your collection.
