1930 Bobby Jones Grand Slam at Merion On Course 'Jones Wins The National Am' Original Wire Photo
This crystal clear, spectacular photo depicts Jones putting on the 18th green during the opening 18 holes of the scheduled 36 hole final match between Jones and Eugene Homans. Thanks to the clarity, Jones is recognized as the individual on the second to the right side of the green with his putter (Calamity Janes) up. They would never return to the 18th green again as Jones would defeat Homans 8 and 7 in the afternoon ending the match on the 11th hole.
On this 18th hole in the morning round Jones and Homans would tie with par fours. That par would give jones a 7 hole lead going into the final scheduled 9 holes. Eleven holes later Jones would win the grand slam.
Besides simply being a highly prized final round Grand Slam photo There are several things that make this photo especially collectible. 1) It gives us a rare aerial view of the 18th green during play which was likely shot from the top floor or roof of the Merion club house; 2) It is an original wire photo with complete original blue paper caption affixed to the rear of the photo; and 3. It uncommonly captures actual play during the match and gives us a glimpse of some of the estimated 18000 spectators who attended the match.
