One inch in diameter gold medal(9K) for placing third in the 1931 Seddon Golf Championship. Horton Smith would participate in several European events prior to and after his play in the British Open. In 1931, Smith would finish T12 in the British Open but the trip did yield him this medal with etched golfer finishing swing. The reverse of medal is etched into gold "SEDDON GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP", "1931 3RD PRIZE", "HORTON SMITH" and "W&M 9 375(?)P". Smith's career would be capped a few years latter as he claimed Masters titles in 1934 and 1936. Born in Springfield, Missouri and serving as a golf pro in Joplin, Mo where he would get the nickname "The Joplin Ghost", Smith is depicted in the book "GOLF IN THE OZARKS" where the medal in this auction is depicted. A copy of this book which shows the medal on page 31 will be included with this lot.
