1931 The Lesley Cup Mass./Penn./N.Y./Eastern Canada 14k Gold Medal Won by Massachusetts G.A.
This medal from the 1931 Lesley Cup tournament brought the best amateurs of New York, Pennsylvania, and Southeastern Canada together for their 26th such match.
The Lesley Cup matches began in 1905. Robert Lesley proposed bringing together leading golfers from Boston, New York and Philadelphia for an annual intercity competition. This evolved into statewide teams from Massachusetts, Metropolitan New York and Pennsylvania. Quebec was named later in the 1920’s and Eastern Canada became the fourth area in the competition. It is believed that the Lesley Cup format became the model for the Walker Cup and Ryder Cup matches.
In this 1932 competition held on the Charles River links in Newton MA, The Massachusetts team would win with a point total of 62 1/2 . Emery P Stratton, whose name is engraved to the rear of this medal, was one of 4 golfers on the Massachusetts team to register a clean sweep in the final day singles competition.
The top front of the medal features a banner with “The Lesley Cup” in bold capital letters. The center depicts 3 crossed clubs and spread across the front are the names of the four cup participants- Massachusetts, Pennsylvania New York Eastern Canada
The rear of the medal is inscribed “ 1931, Won By The Massachusetts Golf Association, at Charles River Country Club, Newton Centre, Massachusetts, E. P. Stratton”
The prestigious nature of the Lesley Cup competition at the time is reflected in the superb quality of this finely crafted 1 ¼ “ medal By J. E. Caldwell of Philadelphia. it was cast in 14K gold. and weighs 12.27 grams on a jewelry scale.
Overall a highly collectible medal both from a Lesley Cup history standpoint and, given the recent increase in the value of gold, it also has a very high intrinsic worth eclipsing $1,000 when this was weighed.
