1933 Western Golf Association Press Pass and Grounds Pass
The Golf Auction has been fortunate to have some great golf items associated with the game over the years, but this has to be the most crazy story ever tied to an event we have offered. Jack "Machine Gun" McGurn of Al Capone's gang entered the '33 Western Open held at Olympia Fields just outside Chicago and was under par for his second round when surrounded by police for his arrest on the seventh hole. The charge was "criminal reputation," due in part to his alleged involvement in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre four years before. Beyond belief, McGurn asked the cops if he could finish his round. Amused, they agreed and joind the other spectators. The officers in his gallery unnerved McGurn the rest of the round, shooting 86, over par by 16 strokes. Arrested as he walked off the 18th hole, McGurn however beat the charges in court before being machine-gunned to death three years later. Whoever originally owned this press pass that day in 1933 at Olympia Fields had the easiest, funniest story to write that day from the Western Open. Along with a Nr-MT press pass comes a similar condition grounds pass for the event. By the way the holders of each of these sources of admittance did see some good golf with Macdonald Smith winning his third Western Open title by six shots over Tommy Armour.
