1937 Newport C.C. Invit. Match Play Sterling Silver Tiffany & Co. Designed Medal Won by Jess Sweetser

No club in the United States is more immersed in the founding of golf in the U.S. then Newport Country Club. The earliest days of Newport were thanks to its co-founder Theodore Havemeyer and his brother Henry. Their fortune had been secured through the family sugar business. Theodore in addition to founding Newport was the first President of the United States Golf Association. His club would become host to both the first U.S. Amateur and the first U.S. Open. In light of their contributions in the earliest years of United States Golf the U.S. Amateur trophy to this day is known by their family name, the Havemeyer Trophy. The Havemeyer name is also displayed on the Newport Country Club's Invitational Match Play winners medal, in this case brother Henry O. In 1937 the July match play championship would be claimed by one of the finest amateur players of all-time Jess W. Sweetser. The frequent Walker Cup performer had already lay claim to a trio of amateur wins that included the N.C.A.A. championship along with both the U.S. & British Amateur titles. As might be expected the Newport award Sweetser won in 1937 was of the highest quality crafted by Tiffany & Co. with their hallmark on the verso side. The front pays tribute to victors in ancient athletic competitions with the laying of a victors laurel wreath. Measuring 1 1/2" diameter this medal is comprised of sterling silver with that marking appearing on the edge of this award. Sweetser in later life would also become a prominent member of the USGA as treasurer of that organizations Executive Committee and their honoree for the Bob Jones Award in 1986.
