1938 Challenge Match Locke/Brews Vs. Cotton/Whitcomb at Walton Heath Photo, Articles & Scorecard
Pinning the Open Championship winners against the South African Open champs, the News of the World Four Ball Challenge Match between Henry Cotton and Reggie Whitcombe and Sid Brews and Bobby Locke (future three-time Open winner) brought droves of spectators to Walton Heath on July 27 and 28 1938 to see the superstars of the day. As complete of ephemeral lots to best capture this memory is before you, with a 'Brews & Locke' scored official '£500 Four Ball Challenge Match' scorecard, an original crystal clear black and white photo stamped and notated on verso and three scrapbook sheets of paper with adhered newspaper and magazine clippings giving an eyewitness account from that spectacle. Whitcombe and Cotton would come out on top, in addition to the gallery that saw it unfold, touted the 'Greatest International Golf Match in the History of the Game' in the first line of the magazine article here. The verso of the folded scorecard is believed to read 'To Mr. Lock Sen: wih compliments from J.M. Brink.'
