1945 NCAA Championship Program with Alister Mackenzie Hole Photos
The Ohio State University and its’ Mackenzie designed golf course hosted the 1945 NCAA Golf Championship. Eighty years later, we are offering the program from that event.
From a golf architecture perspective, and fortunately for Mackenzie aficionados and collectors, this program contains hole by hole photos for all 18 holes as the course looked in 1945.
The photos seem to have been taken from an elevated position thus offering a great perspective nicely showing the hole and its’ bunkering. In addition each of the photos have an outline of the entire hole superimposed on it in white showing bunkers and any hazards.
The 1945 NCAA Golf Championship was the 48th . Ohio State would take advantage of their home venue and win the team championship as well as produce the individual winner, John Lorms, of Ohio State.
Alister Mackenzie designed and completed the routing for Ohio States’ Scarlet Course in 1931 but died in 1934 before ground was broken. Perry Maxwell then oversaw the construction which was completed in 1938.
This program could be considered a “hidden gem”. Not only does it appeal to NCAA and Ohio golf collectors, but it also provides rare architectural documentation of a Mackenzie design that has hosted numerous NCAA championships and other USGA events.
