1952 Women's US Amateur at Waverly GC Contestants Badge - Jacqueline Pung Winner

Pung is a Hall of Fame golfer hailing from the Hawaiian Islands. Even though she is credited with winning the 1952 Women's US Amateur title, she is most widely known for a tournament she did not win! Pung appeared to have beaten Betsy Rawls by one stroke in the 1957 U.S. Women's Open when it was discovered that she had signed an incorrect scorecard and was subsequently disqualified. Both Jaqueline and her playing partner Betty Jameson scored 6s on a Par 4 but marked 5's. Although both players had signed for the correct total score, they were both disqualified. The fans, officials, and members of Winged Foot Golf Club took up a collection for Pung and presented her with over $3,000! This was over $1,000 the winner's share.
