1984 US Open at Winged Foot Winning Final Rd 18th Hole Tournament Used Flown Flag Signed by Fuzzy Zoeller & Runner Up Norman to Caddie
Flown on hole 18 during the 1984 US Open, the hole that Fuzzy played five times that week, this flag was taken down by consignor and caddie Mike Mazzeo that final day Playoff Monday after claiming victory as customary in professional golf. Showing signs of usage and slight age, this blue on yellow '18' U.S. Open flag would then be signed by his player Zoeller along with the adversary during that playoff in Greg Norman. Zoeller and Mazzeo kept things light when possible, the latter stating that they laughed everyday. In good fun, Zoeller inscribed it "Mike - my write off - Fuzzy Zoeller' along with 'US Open "84" Wing Foot.'
Fuzzy Zoeller recounted that week in 1984 with the United States Golf Association in 2021, many of his thoughts still fresh in his head then 37 years later.
Entering mindset: "I was playing a golf course (Winged Foot) that just met my eye from the tee, to the landing area, to the green." Zoeller set the scene. "Par is your number in the US Open, that is your prize. I was able to hit the ball in the areas which put the advantage in my favor and not the golf courses favor." Zoeller's 66 in the second round was the lowest score ever recorded at a US Open at Winged Foot. "I kind of grinded it all the way out" Refering to that week. "I had the patience to wait on it. It's like the bass fisherman sitting out there not catching bo diddly, but he's gonna fish all day and maybe he might catch that one. Well, I caught the one" After the third day it finished with the same three thoroughbreds at the top of the scoreboard.
Winning: " I knew I was playing well enough to win. Now did I have the guts to do it? I had enough faith in myself. You know like I say, I've always been a player that has never been afraid to screw up."
Mentioning Caddy: "Im looking up I'm looking down I'm looking sideways. That's when you look at your caddy (Mazzeo), maybe he will come up with a good suggestion," Fuzzy after overcooking a ball and finding himself in the rough and giving the course back a shot on 14.
What Zoeller thought was a birdie putt from Norman, the next shot he saw after the approach on 18 in Sunday round: "He could stand there with 1,000 golf balls and couldn't get it within 10 feet. But as great players do on occassions they make great shots. This was just an absolute great shot by a great golfer. I looked at my caddy Mike Mazzeo and I said he has just beat us. He goes what do you mean? I said that was for three right. Before I hit my second shot one of the USGA gentlemen came up to be and said that was for four. I said where the h*ll did he hit his second shot to? And he said in the stands." I took a sigh of relief picked up my towel and that's when I waved it at him. Come on Greg give me a break. You're making me stay here one more night, cause I knew I could make four. I said, we'll do it and we live to fight another day."
Playoff: "I was on a mission, I wasn't done yet." "The uphill putts are a lot easier at Winged Foot instead of trying to play the defense type putting down hill, left to right. Yeah I was playing offensive golf. I kept it under the hole which is the place you want to be. Game on!" As the playoff continued, "We were out there pointing at each other having a good time enjoying the game. Enjoying the challenges that crazy game brought." After another long putt rolling in by Zoller they were through 14 holes with a 7-stroke gap the analyst made the remark "If this was a fight they would stop it. This is really criminal what's happening.
"I never felt safe until I holed it on the 18th hole. That's what the US Open, that's the fear that it puts in players. You had two professional golfers going head-to-head that were playing on the tops of their game. Two guys having fun enjoying what they do for a living."
After the ball went in the 18th hole "I could take a sigh of relief, breathe deep and just think about the accomplishment that I just did. Not only did you beat great players during the week but you beat a tremendous golf course and beat par. It's one of the greatest thrills in the world is knowing you're on (the US Open Trophy) with all the...superstars of the game. Now I'm in that history book with them. You dream thinking like that and then all of a sudden your dream comes true. They can't take that away from me.

"Mike Mazzeo was my regular caddie for 18 and a half years. Mike was family. I’m supposed to tell Mike he can’t come to Augusta?” Fuzzy Zoeller didn't often mince words, and this time was no exception when speaking to the Augusta Chronicle on his 1983 Masters caddy choice. It was a telling response, and the feeling was mutual. "I laughed everyday," Mazzeo answered without hesitation when asked what it was like to loop for Fuzzy, whom he still refers to as either "The Boss" or even "The Pied Piper of Golf" three decades later. The relationship started in Zoeller's second year on tour in 1976 and lasted until 1995, with a year and a half break between 1980 and '82. Philadelphia-born, 'The Strategist' was "renown for his precision and expertise" as remembered by the CaddyBytes website in its review of the the games 'legendary caddies' for their "Haul" of Fame. Footage of the 1984 US Open at Winged Foot shows the young, visor clad Mazzeo in stride with Zoeller. The team out-dueled Greg Norman for that memorable feat and 7 others on the PGA Tour. Mazzeo labeled and kept everything his partner gave him, as Zoeller advised him to do saying it "might be worth something someday." Significant balls, flags, some gloves, bags with duck headcovers and even Zoeller's 1984 US Open winning, dated 'FUZ' clubs - Mazzeo's time capsule had it all. Finishing up his career, Mazzeo carried the bags of Curtis Strange, Mike Donald, Mike Reid, Ben Crane and more. Mazzeo then proved he wasn't done, notching a pair of 'W's' - one with both Reid and Crane.
