1990 The Memorial Tournament Contestant Gifted Cut Crystal Lidded Jar w/ Top
This lead crystal lidded vessel, commonly referred to as a pineapple or biscuit jar, was produced for the 1990 Memorial Tournament Contestants, including this one from Mike Donald. While no maker mark is visible in the provided images, visual characteristics and market consensus strongly attribute the item to Waterford Crystal, a traditional provider of commemorative glassware for this event. The jar features a bulbous, barrel-shaped body decorated with complex hand-cut patterns. The lower half displays a dense diamond-cut motif, while the upper portion features stylized wheat or leaf-like cuts. Centered on the front is a smooth, circular etched medallion containing the inscription: The Memorial Tournament 1990. The Memorial Tournament is a prominent PGA Tour event founded by Jack Nicklaus and held annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. This is a seldom seen item. A signed Letter of Provenance from Mike Donald will accompany this lot.
The Mike Donald Collection
Earning a moniker such as 'Iron Mike' in the game of golf isn't easy. Mike Donald did during the 1980's and early 1990's, notching nearly 300 made cuts on a PGA Tour - often in void of the glitz and glam of the game's current pro climate. Some will recognize his name from being a regular on the early 1990's PGA Tour Pro Set trading card checklists - even twice in 1991, earning a 'Statistical Leader' card for his 401 birdies the season prior. 1990 would be a year in which Donald would find himself under the brightest of lights, matching a 50 year old record with "the round of his life" 64 (Lloyd Mangrum) to lead The Masters after Thursday - en route to falling back in the pack for 47th. Just months later he would be on the wrong end of the US Open duel with Hale Irwin in the toughest test of golf. These major trials and tribulations were however sandwiched with great success. Donald earned the dually as difficult "PGA Tour Winner" title on July 16, 1989 when he closed the deal at the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic in Playoff win over Tim Simpson and Hal Sutton. Donald also earned winner's medals at the 1984 JCPenney Mixed Team Classic with Vicki Alvarez and the 1990 Sazale Classic with Fred Couples. Through it all, Donald has stayed humble - with many fond memories of decades ago on the Tour. This offering we proudly feature items from The Mike Donald Collection.
