A Collection of Approximately 75 Vintage Professional Golf Photographs Including Signed Photos
This archive of approximately 75 vintage silver gelatin prints documents professional golf from the late 1930s through the early 1950s. The collection features action shots, tournament press photography, and formal portraits. A significant portion of the lot consists of promotional portraits for the Spalding Golf Advisory Staff, often featuring the company logo in the lower corner and facsimile autographs. Featured subjects include Hall of Fame golfers such as Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, Ken Venturi, Ben Hogan, and Marilynn Smith. The collection includes press photography from several notable venues including Riviera Country Club, York Country Club, and Pinehurst.
Several large-format prints bear original ink signatures and inscriptions on the front. Readable signatures include Johnny Palmer, Willy Goggin (inscribed To my friend Rod Best wishes and good luck Sincerely yours), and Jimmy Thomson (inscribed To my friend Rod Monday Sincerely June 12 1941).
Photographic credit stamps are present on several prints, and multiple prints feature printed AP WIREPHOTO captions detailing tournament events. The reverse of many prints contains handwritten notations in pencil and ink, identifying subjects such as Jimmy Demaret, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, Craig Wood, Art Wall, Ben Hogan, Jack Metz, Toney Penna, Paul Runyan, Paul Miller, Paul Kelly, and Johnny Pott. Several prints retain adhesive residue and black paper fragments from previous album mounting.
