A Rare and Important Blacksmith Made Round Toe Driving Cleek (Circa 1780) - Oldest Club Harry B. Wood Collection

"I'm stunned at the size of the deep nicking" were the words of a club expert with over 50 years of experience when we put this beauty in his hands. Hammer weld around a mandril leaving a visible seam by a blacksmith of the day it bears a 6 inch hosel, one of the longest you will find. Used to play shots that were in compromised lies instead of risking damage to the fragile long nose clubs of the day. A very few irons were made to order for adventurous players seeking clubs to play long fairway shots. Examples are known from the early 1700's as the Square Toe Iron era, and this iron which is an example of such a weapon from the Round Toe era dating to the 1770's through 1820's. Rising this particular example to even a more elevated level of collectability is it's provenance as the oldest club from the famous Harry B Wood Collection. It's placement in this well known collection was well documented as being hung from a string attached to the right side of the cabinet that housed the collection at the Manchester Golf Club. The head, unlike the heavy massive irons of the era, is light, thin, hooked, upright in lie, and bears the Hammer-Weld marks so often seen in pre-1800 golf clubs. In addition, the club appears to have its original ASH WOOD SHAFT, and bears a somewhat worn white Kidd leather grip. This 40 1/2" to the heel iron will make a substantial addition to any collection of old clubs, but particularly for those seeking genuine rarities for a collection of ancient clubs.
