A Trio of Vintage Golf Instructional Books Including Titles by Bert Seymour and Edward Ray
A trio of early 20th-century hardbound golf instructional books featuring cloth and buckram bindings. The collection includes titles focused on technique and the history of the game.
The first volume is titled All About Golf by Bert Seymour, published by Ward, Lock and Co., Limited in 1924. The book is bound in green cloth with black stamped titles and a decorative golf motif on the front cover. The title page identifies the author as the winner of The News of the World Tournament in 1921 and the Essex Championship Cup in 1922. The volume is illustrated with 33 action photographs and various diagrams.
The second volume is titled Inland Golf by Edward Ray, published by T. Werner Laurie Ltd. It is bound in red cloth with gold gilt titles on the front and spine. The interior contains a white rectangular adhesive bookplate with a red border printed in red and blue ink reading NEVIN H. GIBSON 510 East Willamette Street Colorado Springs, Colorado. On the adjacent page is a pencil signature reading W L Cassel. The book features photographic plates of famous players including Harry Vardon and Arnaud Massy.
The third volume is titled The Game of Golf, authored by Roger and Joyce Wethered, Horace Hutchinson, Bernard Darwin, and T. Simpson. Published by Seeley, Service and Co. Limited in 1931, this volume is bound in tan buckram with a gold-stamped crest consisting of a crown over the letter L. The front flyleaf bears a blue ink signature reading G Butler accompanied by the date 1931 and a notation reading 1st Ed. 125 = 75 -. This work is identified as Volume IX of The Lonsdale Library of Sports, Games and Pastimes. It includes numerous plates, including instructional photographic sequences of Miss Joyce Wethered and portraits of players such as Walter Hagen.
