Alger, Horatio, Jr. et al. A Collection of Five Vintage Hardcover Volumes. 1908-1911.
A collection of five vintage hardcover cloth-bound books, primarily featuring titles by Horatio Alger, Jr. Four volumes published by The New York Book Company share a distinctive publisher's binding featuring color-illustrated golfers on the front boards and decorative endpapers depicting various sports equipment including tennis rackets, baseball bats, and golf clubs amidst oak leaves. This group includes A Cousin's Conspiracy or A Boy's Struggle for an Inheritance (1910), Do and Dare or A Brave Boy's Fight for Fortune (1911), Jack's Ward or The Boy Guardian (1908), and Hector's Inheritance (undated). A fifth volume is titled May Martin and Other Tales of the Green Mountains by Daniel Pierce Thompson, published as a New Edition by Lee and Shepard Publishers in Boston as part of the American Girl's Series. This volume features an illustrated front board showing two women, one holding a golf club.
The Horatio Alger volumes include monochrome frontispiece illustrations with captions such as Saving the Indian boy from drowning and Jack seized the old man, thrust him through the secret door and locked it. The title page for A Cousin's Conspiracy is dated 1910, Do and Dare is dated 1911, and Jack's Ward is dated 1908. All volumes are roughly duodecimo to octavo in size. One volume bears the spine mark YT. COLL. above the publisher's name on the spine.
