Alister Mackenzie Inscribed 1920 'Golf Architecture' First Ed Book "With the Author's Compliments"
The inception of a definite "aha moment" was triggered with the pulling back the green front board of this highly coveted first edition 'Golf Architecture' book written by the course design savant Alister MacKenzie. We have presented the title a handful of times over the years, each to a warm bidding reception, this is only one of two that MacKenzie himself left a handwritten missive in. The observer of this reader is greeted by one-of-a-kind inscription by Alister MacKenzie that is penned over 4 lines on the flyleaf page as follows. "To H. Smith - with the author's (Alister MacKenzie)- Compliments - Sept. 1922," MacKenzie penned. Referring to himself as simply the author, as he did in the other example we offered approximately 5 years ago to Cypress Point, it was important to cross-reference the Alister MacKenzie Augusta National Golf Club plans in which he signed as well as left a lengthy notation. The handwriting for this copy as the last is an exact match, with similarities including the distinct slant, formation of each letter not excluding the late cross of the lowercase "t" and spacing throughout and between the words. The highlight of any golf library comes from that of Merrill Murray Lord as notated on the affixed bookplate opposite the message above adhesive remnants. While remaining intact, there are breaks in the spine at the top and bottom of book, please refer to the accompanying lot photos. Incredible piece of history lies in this lot, notated by the famed author Alister MacKenzie himself!
