This antique scare head golf club features a wooden head with a lead weight inset into the rear. The crown of the club head displays an incised circular stamp reading BUTCHART-OSSETT AKLEY WATERTOWN, MASS. The club is constructed with a hickory shaft and includes a leather-wrapped grip. The face of the club shows horizontal scoring and the head is secured to the shaft with a traditional whipped neck joint.
The item exhibits significant signs of age and wear. There is a prominent longitudinal split in the wooden shaft located near the neck joint. The wood shows overall drying and surface loss throughout the head and shaft. The leather grip is heavily deteriorated with significant material loss, drying, and wear.
