Antique Smooth Face Hickory Shaft Niblick Golf Club
This vintage golf club is a high-lofted iron, specifically a niblick, featuring a hand-forged smooth-face steel head and a turned hickory wood shaft. The face of the club is smooth, indicating a production period prior to the widespread adoption of grooved faces in the early 1920s. The head is constructed with a long hosel secured to the shaft by a circular copper or brass pin. The shaft is finished with a light tan suede wrap grip, which is secured at the top and bottom with black whipping.
The back of the club head features several impressed marks. Centrally located are the characters PECIAL, preceded by a partially obscured letter that is likely an S to form the word SPECIAL. Below this text are three stamped symbols arranged in a horizontal row, each resembling a stylized cross or windmill shape with flared ends. Directly underneath these symbols is a small pictographic stamp of a golf club. Along the lower edge of the head, a faint impressed mark reads REG TRADE MARK.
