Ben Hogan Signed Early Career Personal Used Putter w/ Hogan Provenance Letter!
Ben Hogan states "I used this putter in all tournaments I played prior to World War II" in his letter of provenance which is penned on his personal letterhead and was signed in blue ink on April 16, 1973. This putter was originally given to Ben Hogan by Spalding representative George Eastman, the company's Tour Pro representative handling accounts such as Hogan. As Hogan proudly mentions in his letter, he then personally built the grip to his specifications on the Spalding "Cash-In" putter. Hogan, with his meticulous penmanship, has placed a gem mint black marker signature on the blade of this putter. Along with the putter comes the letter of authenticity in Hogan's hand dated 1973 in an intricate gold-toned frame. Seldom, if ever, has actual early career letter documented match-used equipment from the legendary career of Ben Hogan come on the marketplace. This is an opportunity that may never present itself again for the advanced collector. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot. Our thanks on supporting research for this treasured artifact goes out to Jeff Martin, a noted historian who specializes in the career of Hogan with a concentration in his equipment. We are working with him to determine which events this club can be matched by photo or video to show Hogan’s use. As of this moment through examination from the Sydney newspaper it is shown to suggest that Hogan used this putter in the 1940 Masters.
