Ben Hogan & Snead Signed Scored 1945 Exhibition at Shaughnessy Heights GC Scorecard
The post-WWII scorecard 18-hole challenge match pitting recently enlisted Ben Hogan and Sam Snead against locals Fred Wood and Stan Leonard played at Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C., on October 10, 1945 reveals an extremely tense encounter, played out in front of 2500 feverish spectators, a human fairway rushing from hole to hole.
All square at the par 3, 17th tee. The atmosphere must have been palpable. Sam Snead's par on that brutal 232 yard hole nosed the Americans ahead.
All four players pared the final hole leaving Ben Hogan and Sam Snead victors, by a single shot. The vintage original scorecard from the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club in Vancouver, British Columbia features handwritten scores in pencil for each player, totaling: Sam Snead (70), Fred Wood (71), Ben Hogan (72), and Stan Leonard (73). The front interior panel includes two pencil signatures on the designated lines: Ben Hogan on the Competitor line and Sam Snead on the Opponent line. The scorecard lists technical course data, including a length of 6,590 yards from the back tees and a men's par of 72. Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club was the venue for the 1948 Canadian Open, which was won by Ben Hogan. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed these signatures and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
