c. 1910 Heintz Art Metal Shop Sterling Silver on Bronze Golfing Tobacco Humidor
Here is an early 1900’s Heintz golfing bronze humidor or tobacco jar featuring an impressive sterling silver overlay. Heintz was founded in 1906 by Otto Heintz who developed his own elegant style of applying sterling silver to bronze. Otto hit the mark with this beautiful humidor with its tapered cylindrical body and domed lid with a triangular handle. The front of the humidor is decorated with a sterling silver scene depicting a golfer in early 20th-century in mid-swing. The landscape includes trees, clouds, and a distant small building, all rendered in a characteristic Arts and Crafts aesthetic. The bronze is finished with a dark chocolate brown patina. The underside of the base features Heintz’s diamond-shaped logo along the words STERLING ON BRONZE. Heintz passed away in 1918 at 41 years of age and his shop closed in 1930. His legacy of sterling silver on bronze is unmatched and lives on today in some of the finest collections.
