Circa 1830 James McEwan Feather Ball - 'J. McEwan' & '29' Handwritten on Ball
Feathery golf balls are a cornerstone to a vintage golf ball collection, and this feathery is one of the finest condition specimens known. This McEwan ball is a near perfect example and displays exceptionally well, transporting it's admirers to the early times of golf's storied history. Off white, and displays the name nicely across the ball as well as the notation '29' to represent it's weight. The time-consuming processes involved in creating a feather ball ensured that the price was out of reach of the masses. Though expensive, this type of ball had great flight characteristics and made the wooden ball obsolete almost immediately. The leather was cut in two, three or four lobes then fanned out like petals of a flower, three of the sides would be then be sewn together by hand on the inside edge, then boiled goose feathers would be pushed into the open end and finally sewn together. This great example of a named feathery would be the crown jewel of any vintage golf ball collection. James McEwan was son of second generation Peter (1791-1836), and was an apprentice to Gourlay. Placed his name on several balls just prior to his and Peter’s death in 1836. Ex McEwan Family Collection, sold to Patino Collection. Most recent housing with the PGA. A letter of authenticity from PGA Historian Emeritus Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
